Pleated Buoyancy

Pleated Buoyancy

Even if considered conventional by now, the ballet tutu made a scandalous first appearance in 1832. During a performance that featured dancing en pointé for the first time, Marie Taglioni wore a bell-shaped garment that came to be known as the Romantic tutu. Since then, multiple types have surfaced, like the pancake, the platter, and the powder-puff. All are layered variations of soft, net-like fabrics that react to bodily movements at varying degrees of rigidity. Comparably, waves exert upward pressure that both resists and directs a boat in its trajectory. These interactions of opposite forces – of a boat’s capacity to float on water and a tutu’s tendency to flow with the body – inspired the design of this boat. Simultaneously static and dynamic, strained yet flowing, Pleated Buoyancy reflects a dancer’s desire to balance freedom and grace with integrity and propriety. Proceeds benefit Ballets of San Juan.
